Every four years we hear about the inevitable “October Surprise” in and around just about any national political discussion. This is generally fraught with one or more crackpot conspiracy theories, and a plausible scenario thrown in for good measure. Well for somewhere around fifty percent of the populace that “surprise” was a lil late but no less course changing than anyone could have imagined. November came as shock to many no doubt, and will reverberate for some time to come. The result(s) while seemingly wild and head shaking inducing as they might be are nothing more than a solid repeat of times past (Grover Cleveland anyone?) Scenes that invite Monday morning quarterbacking (Wednesday morning?) have been taking place in every political loss since Roosevelt vs. Landon. Yes, a new genre of podcast will probably arise, books will be written and tears will be shed! Yet despite any and all forecasting the work of the people will and must go on. Empires come and go as someone famous once said, exactly who escapes me right now but you get my point.

Our collective ideals, our collective progress & perhaps even our goals will lead us down a path where eventually the climbing and the prospect of even remotely successfully achieveing one or all of these is dependent upon us “helping eachother”. I realize that is a brazen oversimplification and will take way more work than anyone of us is willing to scope out straight away, yet it is entirely possible. As a student of history I can assure you that while there are many, many ways to fry a turkey, what everyone wants from that turkey is to enjoy said turkey at the end of the day. The same can be said of our day to day existence, and in order to get even remotely close to such a lofty goal, a refreshing and unexpected hiccup that results in hitting the reset button is just what the doctor will more often than not prescribe!

The upcoming year will most certainly yield a surprise or two then again, maybe just maybe it will be business as usual. After all, trains will be late, people will hate and the internet will fight over the color of a pair of jeans as IF their very lives depended upon it. With apologies to #jayLivingston (and of course Doris Day) the words “Que Sera Sera” never felt more real.
